Care Guide

  • Alocasias do best in medium to bright indirect light, and some can tolerate lower indirect light (Black Velvet, specifically). Avoid direct sun as Alocasia’s leaves will burn quickly.

  • Alocasias don’t like to dry out completely, so be sure to keep their soil mix consistently moist, but not soggy. If you’ve kept your Alocasia in the potting mix it came with from Obi Plants, watering once a week seems to do the trick.

  • Alocasias prefer warmer temperatures, and cannot tolerate temperatures consistently below 60F. Ideal range is 70-85F, and try to keep them away from cold drafts and AC vents.

  • They prefer higher humidity environments, ideally 65-75%. Keeping your plant in a bright bathroom or kitchen would help with the humidity, and these plants benefit from occasional misting.

  • Alocasias can be prone to root rot, and need a loose, airy soil. The Chunky Aroid Mix they’ve been potted in from Obi Plants is an ideal mix of moisture retention and drainage. Make sure their pot has plenty of drainage, which will also help prevent root rot.

  • All Alocasias contain calcium oxalates in their tissues, making them mildly toxic to pets and people if ingested.
